What's in a string of Christmas lights?
Is it a Rosary stream?
Is it a constellation that's come down to rest on Earth?

Does an angel cradle each one in their hands
Like a candle when they go on?
Red and blue and yellow and green lights
Wavering under the hushed face of an angel.

Is it a Rosary stream?
Are fingers running over the beads
one by one?

Is it a constellation hanging in a tree?
Stars in a tree—
Each one named?

A Christmas light string in the sky,
Like a Rosary chain in the sky,
Like a constellation in a tree.

What's in a string of Christmas lights?
Is it a Rosary stream?
Is it more stars?

When they go on,
Are they cradled
Like a candle
By an angel?

Is it a Rosary stream?
Each bulb an Ave
In a rainbow string?

When they go up
Are they counted
By fingers running
Across each one?

Is it another constellation,
that drifted down to earth?
Stars on earth—
And each one with a tiny name
like a whisper of light behind your eyelid?

Like Rosary beads in the sky,
Like a constellation hanging in a tree,
Like a radio tower flash
between earth and heaven.

Like a radio tower flash
between earth and heaven.
